Custom fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) storage tanks engineered for industrial and test facility applications. Fabricated using epoxy vinyl ester resin systems for enhanced corrosion resistance, these tanks are available in multiple diameters and configurations, with custom nozzles and penetrations to meet specific process requirements.
Description
Project Overview
Crimar Industrial completed the fabrication and delivery of two custom fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks for an industrial test facility application. The scope included one 4-foot diameter tank and one 8-foot diameter tank, each engineered with different top configurations to meet site-specific and operational requirements.
These tanks were manufactured in Tucson, Arizona, and delivered fully finished, ready for installation and integration into the client’s test system.
Why FRP Tanks for Test Facility Environments
Industrial test facilities often operate under demanding conditions where chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and long service life are critical. Traditional steel tanks can introduce corrosion risks, coating maintenance, and lifecycle cost concerns.
FRP tanks offer a practical alternative by combining:
- High corrosion resistance
- Low maintenance requirements
- Design flexibility for custom nozzles and penetrations
- Long-term performance in aggressive environments
For test facilities, this translates into predictable performance and reduced downtime over the operating life of the equipment.
Tank Configurations Delivered
The project included two distinct tank designs to support different functional needs:
- 4 ft Diameter Tank
- Flat top
- Flat bottom
- Compact footprint for localized testing or process staging
- 8 ft Diameter Tank
- Dome top
- Flat bottom
- Increased volume capacity while maintaining structural integrity
Both tanks were custom-built to accommodate multiple nozzles, flanged connections, and external mounting features as required by the facility layout.
Materials and Resin System
All tanks were fabricated using Hetron™ 922 epoxy vinyl ester resin, selected for its proven performance in chemically aggressive and industrial service conditions.
Key material benefits include:
- Excellent chemical resistance
- High mechanical strength
- Enhanced durability under cyclic operating conditions
- Suitability for long-term industrial exposure
The resin system choice was aligned with the facility’s operational requirements and expected service environment.
Fabrication and Quality Considerations
Each tank was manufactured using controlled layup processes to ensure consistent wall thickness, structural reinforcement, and surface finish. Particular attention was given to:
- Nozzle reinforcement zones
- Flange alignment and sealing surfaces
- Flatness and stability of tank bottoms
- External mounting and lifting features
All fabrication steps were executed under internal quality controls to ensure dimensional accuracy and repeatability.
Delivery and Installation Readiness
The tanks were delivered fully cured, coated, and prepared for installation. Temporary covers were applied to all nozzles and openings to protect sealing surfaces during transport and handling.
This approach minimizes on-site preparation work and helps streamline installation timelines for the end user.
